WAYS TO MANAGE CONSTIPATION

Constipation can cause severe medical problems that may lead to bowel surgeries. Hence the need to prevent and manage it properly.
Constipation can be managed through basic life style changes like diet and exercises.
To manage constipation effectively, increase fluid intake, preferably water. As juices and other form of fluids may worsen constipation symptoms. Exercise regularly. Eat healthy by eating food rich in vegetables and fruits. Eat fruits ,food and vegetables rich in fibre. Eat more of brown rice instead of white rice. Eat more cooked food instead of fried foods. Eat fibre rich fruits like apples, pears, berries, plums and nuts. Make beans part of your vegetable consumption daily. Eat broccoli and apricots. Eat more of potatoes, not fried but cooked and in any other form. Drink prune juice instead of regular juice. Eat whole wheat grains. If diet does not work, try natural laxatives, like cascara sagrada, rhubarb, aloe, senna tea and buckthorn before using artificial laxatives. Artificial laxatives should be your last resort, as your bowels may become dependent on these laxatives .
If constipation is not relieved by these remedies, see your doctor as soon as possible for further check up and investigation.

SPECIAL BLOG ON CONSTIPATION FOR NIGERIAN AUDIENCE :CONSTIPATION REMEDY

The last blog was on constipation and proposed  follow up blog on constipation  remedy. However I received quite a number of messages from Nigerian audience on how to manage constipation with Nigerian food. Nigeria has one of the best foods in the world. There are so many Nigerian foods that can help manage and prevent constipation. To manage constipation successfully in a warm climate like Nigeria, hydration comes first.
Drink plenty of water, not juice. The sugar in juice may worsen constipation. Drink prune juice if available, it is a natural laxative or eat prune fruit/nectar. Exercise enough, by taking cool evening walks or running where possible. Eat foods rich in fibre like, Oats meal, cereals rich in fibre, garri, water yam, coco yam, okroa, cassava flour or meal, plantain flour(elubo), and  yam flour .Eat more of vegetables, like bitter leaf, water leaf, green leaf, pumpkin leaf, okazi, scent leaf, egusi, ogbono, any form and type of salads etc.
Cut down on fast foods and sugary baked foods. Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread. Eat lots of nuts, like groundnut, wall nut, cashew nut. Eat fruits like mangoes, they contain a lot of fibre, oranges with their pulps, pumpkins, sour sup, guava, cashew, cherries, tangerines, pears of any kind, papaya, etc. Eat beans as much as you can in any way or form like moi moi, akara, cooked beans with oil etc.
Reduce red meat consumption and increase chicken and fish intake. Eat less rice and more vegetable.
Try food and lifestyle changes before laxatives. Let laxative be your last resort.
If constipation persist despite lifestyle and dietary changes, see your doctor as soon as you can, for further medical investigation.

Increase vegetable consumption helps to prevent constipation.

CONSTIPATION AND ITS IGNORED EEFECTS

Constipation is defined as defecating or having stools less than three time per week .It can also be defined as having hard stool or excessive/difficulty straining to stool.
In cases of severe constipation a person defecates as less as one time per week. Constipation may present with signs of lower abdominal pain, having small hard stools like pebbles, rectal bleed, and frequent urge to defecate.
The dangerous effects of constipation are often ignored by many.  Constipation left untreated either by food or laxative, may lead to :
1, Irritable feelings
2, weight gain
3, Hemorrhoids
4, Body odor due to the accumulation of toxins from bacteria from unexpelled faecal waste.
5, Skin eruptions
6, Headaches
7, Nausea and vomitting
Constipation can lead to severe medical problems. If stool stays in the intestine for too long, the bacteria in the faeces starts to multiply in the intestinal tract and then promote the growth of harmful fungi. Too much stool in the stomach may cause breathing problems .It can also cause to bowel blockage .
Constipation can be treated with food or laxatives, preferably food.
On my next blog, I will be discussing simple and non expensive  remedies for constipation.
Excessive straining to defecate is a sign of constipation

FEELINGS YOU SHOULD NOT IGNORE DURING URINATION

The urinary tract includes the kidneys, ureter, bladder and urethra.
Whatever affects anyone of these affects the others directly or indirectly if left untreated. The all work together to enable the passing of urine waste. The following are signs of urination that should not be ignored::
1. Painful or burning feeling when urinating.
2. Frequent urination and incomplete emptying of the bladder.
3. Foul smelling urine.
4.Cloudy colored urine with some sediments.
5. Blood in the urine.
6. Passing small amount of urine at a time with persistent urge to urinate.
7. Experiencing flank pain or pain on the side of the abdomen that radiates to the back.
If anyone experience these symptoms, it means they have a urinary tract infection. These infections are simple treated with antibiotics. If left untreated, can impair kidney function and lead to progressive kidney damage. If you experience these symptoms accompanied with fever, weakness, tiredness , nausea and vomiting, go to the emergency department immediately for prompt medical attention.

In kids urinary tract infection symptoms may be bed wetting, irritability and diarrhea. If your child is experiencing these symptoms seek medical help immediately.

Urinary tract infection affects more women than men. It should  never be left untreated. It can only be treated with antibiotics. Drinking extra fluids does not cure urine infection. Seek help from your doctor.

COMMON HABITS ,LIFESTYLE AND OCCURENCE THAT CAUSES KIDNEY FAILURE

The kidneys are vital organs of the human body whose function is to help maintain overall health including filtering waste product and excess fluid from the body. The function of the kidney is closely connected to other vital organs like the heart and lungs. If the kidney begins to have problem and it is left untreated, the other  organs like the heart especially will start having problems as well.
Humans needs less than one kidney to function normally. Hence kidney failure may not cause symptoms in the early stage.
Some common causes of kidney failure are:
1. Illicit drug use like heroine, marijuana ,cocaine etc.
2. Untreated infections especially urinary tract infections
3.  Overuse of over the counter pain killers like Tylenol, paracetamol, ibuprofen, Panadol etc.
4. Dehydration and starvation
5. Uncontrolled hypertension
6. Uncontrolled diabetes
7. Certain auto immune diseases
8. Excessive bleeding or blood loss
9.Cancer
10. Exposure to chemicals through the skin, mouth, other opening in the body.
11. Pee holding
12. Kidney stones
13. Use of fake drugs
14. Misuse of prescription drugs or overdose.

HOW TO SAFELY CONSUME EGGS AND PREVENT FOOD POISONING

Large number of eggs are consumed daily world wide. Many egg consumers know very little about safe handling of eggs. Egg is an ideal medium for micro-organisms to grow and flourish. One of the most common is salmonella. Salmonella is a bacteria  know for causing food poisoning. When egg is handled properly, the risk of contamination is greatly reduced. They can be contaminated outside through the hands, hair, and saliva of people that handle them during preparation. Do not use eggs when the shells are cracked, even eggs when intact may be contaminated by bacteria that penetrates the shell through its numerous pores. Those with cracked shells have greater risk of contamination. Discard eggs with faeces on their shells,  faeces have lots of bacteria that can penetrate through the pores of the shell. So washing the eggs to consume will not be helpful.
Do not consume raw eggs, since bacteria grow easily on raw eggs. Instead consume pasteurized eggs, pasteurization kills micro-organisms. Cook thoroughly until egg yolk and white becomes solid. Consume eggs immediately after cooking and  discard left overs. Wash hands thoroughly after handling eggs. Do not store eggs with other foods due to the risk of contamination. Studies show that 67% of salmonella food poisoning comes from eggs. Discard eggs after 3 weeks. Refrigerate eggs after pooling, do not add additional eggs after pooling eggs for a while. Use same the same day. Clean kitchen surfaces thoroughly after preparing eggs.
Store eggs in refrigerator.
Safe egg consumption prevents food poisoning.

HEALTH HAZARDS CAUSED BY SOFT DRINKS

Soft drinks causes more health hazard than one can ever imagine. There are certain facts about soft drink consumption that  people are not aware of. Soft drinks are notorious for their high sugar content. They cause irritation and inflammation to the mucous lining of the stomach. People with stomach ulcers, gastritis and digestive disorders should stay away from soft drinks, they may cause or lead to worse health problems that may be difficult to treat. Soda affects and destroys the enamel of the teeth and cause dental caries. Daily or increased soda/soft drinks consumption can lead to decalcification of the bones, individuals with osteoporosis, rickets or any form of bone disease should avoid soft drinks. These symptoms may not be felt at a younger age, but will begin to unveil as a person gets older. Which  may lead to serious mobility issues.
They increase the risk of kidney stones. They may also cause allergies, increased anxiety and irritability. They can affect the nervous system as well. Soft drinks cause weight gain and makes a person age faster.
