WOMEN'S HEALTH: HOW OFTEN SHOULD PADS AND TAMPONS BE CHANGED DURING MENSTRUATION

During menstruation , the menstrual blood that leaves the body gets contaminated with the micro-organisms on the skin. Even when bleeding is minimal, pads and tampons can become damp. This may be due to sweat and vaginal secretions. Dampness makes it easy for microbes to breed and multiply. Hence the need to change tampons and pads regularly. If tampons and pads are left for too long, it becomes breeding ground for micro-organisms which can cause urinary tract infections, vaginal infections and painful menstrual rash.
It is recommended that pads be changed every 4 to 6hrs and tampons every 2 to 3hrs, depending on menstrual flow.
Tampons left in for too long may cause systemic infection that can cause the organs to malfunction. The body may go into shock and shut down completely, even leading to death if the infection is not treated promptly.
Take regular bathes and change pads/tampons regularly to avoid  complications.
